Antonio Vetrò is Assistant Professor at the Department of Control and Computer Engineering of Politecnico di Torino. He serves as Senior Research Fellow at the Nexa Center for Internet and Society. He is also senior research fellow and member of scientific board of the Italian Institute for Advanced Studies in Torino “Umberto Eco”.

Antonio conducts interdisciplinary studies on the relationship between digital technologies and society: he is currently studying how to detect and mitigate discriminations of automated decision systems. He has a long experience in empirically evaluating methods for software and data quality improvement.

Teaching and other current activities

In the last two years, Antonio is regularly teaching at the following courses at the Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering: "Digital technologies and society", "Data Ethics and Data Protection", and "Software Engineering 2".

He is member of the international committee ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7/WG6 Software and System Engineering - Software Product and System Quality and of the Italian Software Engineering Committee at UNINFO (delegated at ISO for standardisation in information technologies).

He serves in the editorial board of the International Journal of Technoethics (IJT) and of MDPI Information. He often serves as reviewer for Elsevier Government Information Quarterly, Springer Empirical Software Engineering, Elsevier Journal of System and Software.

Background and current activities

Antonio has been senior research fellow and adjunct member of the scientific board of the Future Urban Legacy Lab at Politecnico di Torino from April 2018 to September 2021. He has also been Director of Research at the Nexa Center for Internet and Society at Politecnico di Torino (Italy) from November 2015 to August 2017 and Research Programs Manager at ORS from September 2017 to January 2018.

Further in the past, he has been post-doctoral research fellow in the Software and System Engineering Department at the Technische Universität München (Germany) and junior scientist at the Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering (MD, USA).

He holds a PhD in Information and System Engineering from Politecnico di Torino (Italy), obtained working at the Software Engineering Research Group (Softeng, at the Department of Control and Computer Engineering) with a doctoral thesis on the empirical assessment of the impact of static code analysis on software quality.

Antonio has also volunteered in several development cooperation projects in Bosnia i Herzegovina, Kenya, India and as well in local communities in Italy.
